vendredi nov. 19 2007 (intro to Max/MSP and visit to the calanque)

(scott, julien, add your comments, this a text to edit)

Preparing the session for next friday we set up for a second time an ad-hoc network, this time we didn't use the T41 linux laptop to create the first node, we used an ibook from the Sound Lab (Atelier de Son) of the ESAA. 3 computers/clients set in ad-hoc mode sending data from both pd and max to each other. 2 basic tests where done: Walk til the villa and see that the transmission power was strong to send the data for more thn 30mts line of sight. This means that with a clear line of sight we can have decent connections in the range of the 100mts (being optimistic). Second, we tirned off the ibooks wireless card to see that its pd client on port 3001 stop receiving data but the third machine did continue to receive it. When opened and set on its wireless device again it regained automatically the role in the network and began again to receive data. Among other important things to consider: is possible to have a second network card connected to internet and be able to send the data to a remote location.

The second session was supposed to be a tow part seminar, first part introducing some locative art projects that involve the use of sound, geolocation and physical computing. Second an introduction to Pd (puredata) and ad-hoc networks.

Since Scott was busy preparing a 3d workshop at Aix and Julien was on a trip i went by myself and decided to simply make and intro to Pd, so first thing was to install puredata in the laptops of the students, there where 6 in totla, 2 wintel and 4 macintosh, only one ibook g3 with system 10.3 (panther) that gave us a hard time installing Pd since it lacked the software to uncompress .dmg files. The class had around 14 students and the ones that didn't had a laptop where patching in paper notes and asking questions all the time making it easier to explain via examples. We covered basically the intro to the dataflow programming paradigm showing the difference between an object, a message, a number box.

Basic examples using Bang, Toggle, Print, Message Box, Metro and the math object +. I explained the use if the editing mode and the executing mode along with the use of the help browser to access the tutoeial examples.

We also talked about pure:dyne, GNU/linux (open source software) and the One Laptop Per Child project that served for introducing the notion of Ad-Hoc networks.

The session was closed with a patch that was able to playback a sound file, theres a need to continue explaining Pd basics since everyone is very much interested, they where caught on the idea of transmitting data in a distributed network and seem to be willing to explore Pd by themselves. :)
